Images matter for web performance. They matter A LOT. According to the HTTP Archive, images account for over 60% of bytes on an average desktop page, almost 70% on mobile. In fact, image bytes are the single biggest driver in overall page load time.

While images seem simple, that could not be farther from the truth. The variety of image formats, quality levels and screen sizes make image-related decisions are hard to make. Retina displays and Responsive Web Design and stubborn designers further fuel this fire, making optimization that much harder.

Luckily, you’re not the only one dealing with this challenge. Over the last few years, different techniques and tools were created to help keep images from slowing down your page. These range from compressing images, through tuning images to the current device and network, to loading images on-demand and more.

In this tutorial we’ll review these techniques, and help you identify and implement the techniques that are right for you. We’ll share tools that can help implementation, and share data about the results you can expect. Finally, we’ll discuss what’s next for image optimization, and how you can get involved.
