Blackbuck Antelope

The blackbuck antelope (Antilope cervicapra) is an endangered species found mainly in India, and is also known as the Indian antelope. On the open plain, the blackbuck is one of the fastest animals on earth, able to reach speeds of 45 mph and outrun most predators over long distances. From the 18th through the early 20th centuries, the blackbuck antelope was the most hunted wild animal in India. In 1932, several species of Indian deer and antelope, including the blackbuck, were introduced to Texas for hunting and breeding. Today, these species live on private hunting ranches and roam the surrounding hill country.They are so plentiful-having multiplied to 19,000 throughout the state-that many have been shipped to India to repopulate the native habitat. Now protected in India by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the blackbuck population is steady at 50,000 native animals, plus 43,000 descended from Texas and other populations. According to Hindu mythology, the blackbuck is considered to be the vehicle of the moon god, Chandrama, and is believed to bestow prosperity wherever it lives.

Greyhound

The greyhound is the fastest dog in the world, reaching speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, enabled by its streamlined, narrow body; large lungs, heart, and muscles; double suspension gallop (two periods of a gait when all four feet are off the ground); and the flexibility of its spine. Although greyhounds are incredibly fast, they are actually low-energy dogs and lack endurance, requiring less exercise time than most dogs. Greyhounds are one of the oldest breeds of dogs, appearing in art and literature throughout history. In ancient Egypt, greyhounds were often mummified and buried with their owners, and hieroglyphics from 4000 B.C.E. show a dog closely resembling the modern greyhound. In Greek and Roman mythology, greyhounds were often depicted with gods and goddesses. Greyhounds appeared in the writings of Homer, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, and they are the only type of dog mentioned in the Bible. They've long been appreciated for their intelligence, graceful form, athleticism, and loyalty.

Raven

The raven (Corvus corax), the world's largest black bird, is a member of the familyCorvidae, which includes crows, jays, and magpies. They are one of the most widespread, naturally occurring birds worldwide. While they can be found throughout most of the Northern Hemisphere in many types of habitats, they are permanent residents of Alaska, where they nest anywhere from the Seward Peninsula to the mountains of southeast Alaska. Unlike many birds, ravens do not undertake long migrations, but they do relocate locally for nesting each year. There is no mistaking the raucous call of the raven; its deep, resonant caw is its trademark, yet the bird can produce an amazing assortment of sounds.

The raven has played important roles in many cultures, mythologies, and writings. Ravens disobeyed Noah during the great flood by failing to return to the ark after being sent to search for land. In Norse mythology, the god Odin ordered two ravens named Thought and Memory to fly the world each day so they could inform him of what was happening.

Short-Eared Owl

The short-eared owl's signature ear tufts are small and appear simply as ridges on the top of its large head. These tufts become more visible, however, when the owl feels threatened and enters a defensive pose. One of the world's most widespread avian species, this is a migratory bird that can be found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The short-eared owl lives in open country, such as prairies, marshland, or tundra. During breeding season, males exhibit spectacular aerial courtship displays in which they clap their wings together, rise in circles to great heights, and dive rapidly toward the ground. The short-eared owl is also somewhat of a thespian in the animal world-it will play dead to avoid detection, or feign a crippled wing to lure predators away from its nest.
