The early years of cloud computing have generated excitement around the automatic scaling of systems like social networks, games, and others kinds of “Web 2.0” applications. The excitement often centered around the belief that you could throw your capacity planning efforts out the door and let the cloud scale your systems for you in response to the demands users were placing on your infrastructure.
