If you had five minutes on stage what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Would you pitch a project? Launch a web site? Teach a hack? We’ll find out this year at Ignite Velocity.
Ignite Velocity will happen on Monday, June 22 at 8:00pm.
This is the rock star lineup of Ignite talks we have confirmed. Keep checking back for updates:
Dave McClure – Startanomics
Neil Gunther (@DrQz) – Scalability for Quants
Why are there no 30 ft giants or 2,000 ft beanstalks like the ones in “Jack and the Beanstalk”? Weight-strength models tell us their scalability reaches a critical point and they would BOTH collapse. How big can your web site scale before a performance collapse? How do you know? Prove it! Measurement alone is NOT sufficient. How do you know those data are correct? You need both: Data + Models == Insight
Adrian Cockcroft (@adrianco)- Millicomputing – The Future in your Pocket
A prediction of the future of mobile devices, which I started giving about 18 months ago at various venues including eComm, BiL, and Usenix. I will check in to see how my predictions have been tracking with time, and make some new ones. Millicomputing is being driven by a convergence of devices like the iPhone and Android moving up in performance, with Intel’s Atom coming down in power consumption. The future is an always on always connected laptop capacity device in your pocket, and the real fun starts when you add wireless video interfaces and enable computer assisted telepathy.
Jérémie Bordier (@ahfeel)- Beware of your hype value store!
Key value stores are popping all around the web, describing themselves as the best fit for your webapp… but take care of the hype ! Think you’ll have 10000+ writes a sec ? There’s a lot of unsaid “special features” that you have to know. Don’t trust benchmarks, even your own. Here’s how to choose the right key value store for your app !
Thor Muller – The Space Elevator: Our Last, Best Hope
Rockets, schmockets. It’s time to take on space in a kinder, gentler way, putting our collective efforts towards the largest scale construction project in history.
Stoyan Stefanov (@stoyanstefanov) – Image Weight Loss Clinic
50% of the average web page weight is images. And 10-20% of the average web image size is nothing but just extra fat. Keeping off that fat is easy, all you need is a proper automated process, one that doesn’t require human eye verification or manual intervention.
Nelz – Adopting SF Prankster Culture
One geek’s 10-year journey to find an outlet for his social creativity.
Bill Westerman (@billwesterman)- Faster Customers: the final frontier
So you’ve tweaked, tuned, load balanced, and rearchitected until you’re blue in the face, but you’re still not getting the throughput you want. What’s left? Accelerate your customers!
James Urquhart -
Cliff Moon – Dynomite: Towards a Distributed Database Framework
Dynomite is a distributed key-value storage system modeled after Amazon’s Dynamo. I will talk about the future direction, which is to produce a generic framework for applying dynamo style distribution to any data model or query model.
Artur Bergman – Varnish
